 Sponsor | cinemaman | Apr 11, 2005 2:17pm | | With summer looming in the Northern Hemisphere, I always think back to my youth when the remake of Eddie Cochran's 1950's "Summertime Blues" was being belted out by "Blue Cheer" (1968) and "The Who" (1974), both who had extremely successful remakes of Cochran's timeless anthem for a rebelious generation. By far, "Summertime Blues" tops my list (any version, though "Blue Cheer's" edgy version is much overlooked). I was curious what favorite remakes/covers of noted songwriters you may have? |

You'd ask yourself well how can you cover something so iconic without reducing it somehow. The answer is respect the roots of the original, have a terrific guitar player and a singer who has the raw qualities of Lennon's voice and understands his phrasing, but strip away some of the studio frills (e.g., "hohoho heeheehee hoohoohoo hahahah") that would mark it as too imitative. My other favorite remakes are Dylan redoing most everything he writes, notably on the same album (Planet Waves) Forever Young done as almost a slow lullabye (no rhythm section) and then with country bounce the second time. |
