With summer looming in the Northern Hemisphere, I always think back to my youth when the remake of Eddie Cochran's 1950's "Summertime Blues" was being belted out by "Blue Cheer" (1968) and "The Who" (1974), both who had extremely successful remakes of Cochran's timeless anthem for a rebelious generation. By far, "Summertime Blues" tops my list (any version, though "Blue Cheer's" edgy version is much overlooked). I was curious what favorite remakes/covers of noted songwriters you may have?

Tim Buckley's "Song To The Siren" covered by The Czars. Astonishingly good. But you've probably never heard of either.....sigh...

This discussion of "cover-versions" got me Googling and I found this interesting commentary called The Classics and Beyond dealing with remakes and cover versions with a list of some of the most "seminal" cover versions in modern music history. Good reading...

The song When I Get Home by Bobby Darin hear the Searchers explain how they found it in a juke box and perform it live on their BBC Sessions CD.

Just listened to the startlingly good cover Oasis did of the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus." You'd ask yourself well how can you cover something so iconic without reducing it somehow. The answer is respect the roots of the original, have a terrific guitar player and a singer who has the raw qualities of Lennon's voice and understands his phrasing, but strip away some of the studio frills (e.g., "hohoho heeheehee hoohoohoo hahahah") that would mark it as too imitative. My other favorite remakes are Dylan redoing most everything he writes, notably on the same album (Planet Waves) Forever Young done as almost a slow lullabye (no rhythm section) and then with country bounce the second time.

My favourite cover of all time has got to be when Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nails - Hurt. And the very poignant video was amazing too.

Paul Simon's tune "America" was covered by Yes in the 1970's and it brought that song to a new level. It went from being a pleasant folk song of sorts to a great rock tune. I've heard that Paul Simon enjoys it as well.
